The advantages of taking your English course on the Mediterranean island of Malta
Malta is a small island nation in the Mediterranean to the south of Sicily and east of Tunisia. It consists of two main islands, Malta and Gozo, and a number of other small islands. Getting there is easy as there are regular flights from many cities in Europe and North Africa, and also ferries from Catania and Genoa in Italy. Getting around is also easy as there are regular, reasonably-priced buses to most destinations, and many places are within walking distance.
Malta has a warm, sunny climate, an average annual temperature of 26° Celsius and low rainfall. The sea is warm enough to swim in from about May to October, the period of the year with the most sunshine – 10 hours a day on average, and the lowest rainfall. Thanks to this climate, Malta is a great place for scuba diving, snorkelling, water skiing and other water sports. If you prefer to keep to land-based activities, there are plenty to choose from, including rock-climbing, horse riding, walking and mountain biking.
Malta has been home to many different peoples, including Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Saracens, Normans, and most recently the British. As a result, there is a wealth of historical sites to explore, as well as museums, art galleries and theatres. There’s also plenty to do a night in St. Julian’s, which has plenty of restaurants, night clubs, bars, a large cinema and a bowling alley.
The official languages are Maltese and English, and Italian is also spoken by many people. There are plenty of English language schools there offering a range of courses from General English and Examination Preparation, to specialised courses such as Medical English and Business English. Some also offer English courses combined with sports and other activities.
The schools can arrange accommodation with local families, in residences, in apartments or hotels, all within easy travelling distance. They also arrange activities and excursions.
So Malta is a great place to learn some English and to have a holiday at the same time. The locals are friendly and welcoming, it’s easy to get to and around, there’s plenty to see and do there, the climate is warm and sunny year-round, they use Euros there, visitors from the EU and a number of others places don’t need visas, and there’s a good selection of English language schools to choose from.
