Study in Montpellier
Friday, 19th June 2009
The capital of France’s Languedoc Roussillon region, Montpellier is a city with a long history that is well-known for its intellectual and cultural tone.
History
Montpellier came to prominence in the 10th century as a trading centre, with trading links across the Mediterranean world.
The city’s famous university was founded in the thirteenth century, which makes it one of the oldest in the world. Its medical faculty was the first in the western world and remains one of the premier institutes to study medicine in France today. All in all, students make up about a quarter of Montpellier’s population.
Attractions
It is not only students who flock to Montpellier - the city has a vibe quite unlike any other in the south of France, which attracts people from far and wide.
Montpellier has a definite buzz about it, and there are always plenty of things to see and do. From wandering its narrow streets and boutique shops to sampling the gastronomic delights of the region, there are plenty of ways for you to while away a sunny afternoon.
Local sights worth a visit include:
- the Cathédrale St-Pierre
- the Jardin des Plantes (1593), France’s oldest botanic garden
- the array of grand private mansions with large inner courtyards that were built by wealthy merchants in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Surrounding areas
Within easy reach of the city are plenty of other things to see and do.
Situated just 12km away, at Palavas-les-Flot, are some lovely beaches for anyone who likes soaking up the sun. Well worth a visit too are the beautiful and historic towns of Nimes, Carcassonne and Beziers – all a short car or bus journey away.
