Events in Germany: Dresden Film Festival

Monday, 8th February 2010

The Dresden Film Festival (Filmfest Dresden) has been running since 1989. It focuses on short films and animation, and attracts over 20,000 people each year.

The festival, which takes place from 20th to 25th April in 2010, holds competitions for both international and local films, and winners receive prizes called ‘Golden Horsemen’. Prize money is up to €7,500.

The film festival offers a great reason for people to visit this charming East German city that is so often overlooked as a tourist destination.

Dresden lies on the river Elbe and is packed with royal palaces and other beautiful and impressive buildings. It’s the capital of the German state of Saxony and used to be capital of the Kingdom of Saxony. Although much of the city was destroyed during World War II, many of the historic buildings have been restored to their former glory since then. Since German reunification in 1990, Dresden has become a major cultural, political and economical centre in eastern Germany.

With its Baroque architecture and many world-famous museums and art galleries, and its mild climate and pleasant location, Dresden has been called the Florence of the Elbe (Elbflorenz).

Dresden claims to be one of the greenest cities in Europe with nearly two thirds of its area being parks, forests and other green areas. The area along the river Elbe is particularly attractive with plenty of greenery, palaces and other fine houses, as well as cycle tracks and footpaths.

It’s easy to get about Dresden with plenty of forms of transport to choose from. As well as modern trams, trains and buses, there are also numerous horse-drawn conveyances, including antique wooden buses and carriages, and the Old City is compact enough to explore on foot.

As well as watching the films being shown during the film festival, there are plenty of other things to see and do in Dresden. These include opera at the Semper Opera House, classical music performances by world renowned Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra and the Dresden Kreuzchor boys’ choir, numerous theatrical performances to suit all tastes at the city’s theatres, and a number of museums and art galleries.

Dresden is a good place to study German with a number of good language schools offering German language courses at all levels, and also preparatory courses for German language proficiency exams.
