Celebrate the European Day of Languages - September 26th 2011

An initiative of the Council of Europe, the European Day of Languages has been celebrated on 26 September every year since 2001, making this year its ten year anniversary.

Throughout Europe, people are encouraged to learn more languages, at any age, in and out of school.

On the European Day of Languages, a range of events are organised across Europe:  activities for and with children, television and radio programmes, language classes and conferences. National authorities and the various partners are given a free hand to organise activities.

Although schools and universities in particular will mark the day with special events and seminars, anyone can get involved in the European Day of Languages - even if it’s just about inviting neighbours from different cultures for tea, watching a foreign language DVD, or sampling that bottle of Côtes du Rhône on offer in the local supermarket! It all counts..the hope is simply that, even if only for a day, your horizons will be broadened and your taste for foreign culture and language heightened.
