A perfect way to prepare last-minute for travels abroad – 4-week ‘survival’ language courses
Thursday, 17th June 2010

When it comes to foreign travels, whether for 2 weeks or 2 months, there are so many preparations to make and so much expense involved that learning some of the language often gets relegated to the bottom of the ‘to do’ list.
Finding the time to motivate yourself to listen to that Spanish CD you got free with the paper, or to read through your French notes from high school is hard. Especially when there is beach-wear to be bought, final hotel reservations to be confirmed and arrangements to be made for temporarily re-housing your canine companion.
Although the convenience factor is a big advantage of self-study language learning options, it’s always harder to motivate yourself for this kind of training, irrespective of what else you have going on! Attending regular classroom-based lessons is much more conducive to enthusiasm and motivation, but it is usually assumed that attending a regular language class at a private language school will be outrageously expensive, and very time-consuming, which in actual fact is not always true…
‘Survival’ language classes for travelers and holiday makers are now available in locations throughout the US and Canada, and are an affordable, effective way to pick up some of the language before you head off on vacation. They have the added bonus of being low in terms of time commitment too.
The courses are held over 4 weeks, involve one 2-hour session each week and are available from $149.
Of course, it is possible to get by pretty much anywhere without speaking a word of the local language, but elements of your vacation will be easier, and you will probably get more out of the experience, if you can pick up some of the language before you go. Survival courses are the perfect way to learn the basics without having to invest in a more expensive and long-term program.
