A lot of Germans speak very good English, but making an effort to learn some of the language before you go on holiday to Germany, Switzerland or Austria will always be appreciated!

When ordering at a restaurant in Hamburg, I have found that it's more common to say:
Ich hätte gern [ein Glas Rotwein]. -or- Ich nehme [ein Glas Rotwein], bitte! -rather than- Ich möchte [ein Glas Rotwein]
