Why school trips abroad are beneficial for students

As the world becomes more and more internationalised, it's apparent that students need to learn more than just about their own identity.

Learning foreign languages in school is a great start for children to understand different cultures. But it is just a start. In order to maximize the development of a new global perspective even further, schools need to support language trips abroad.

School trips abroad bring benefits to students that simply cannot be learned just by sitting in a classroom. Firstly, if each student is fully exposed to a different culture they will have a better understanding of it. This entails being fully immersed in the culture, which will bring to life the history and language of the country they are learning about.

School trips abroad incorporate learning skills far beyond those taught in the classroom in an organised, chaperoned environment. Many students gain invaluable leadership skills when travelling. The organisation it takes for a group to travel abroad together is a life-learned lesson. Logistically getting from Point A to Point B in an organised fluid manner, the gathering of passports, visas and other required documents, is all a responsibility in itself. Following that, it is the travelling in a group that can play a vital lesson. Being away from the comforts and routine of home can be a challenge for anyone. Compromise and sharing with your fellow classmates while travelling can be hard on anyone and in a school-chaperoned environment it may just be the perfect balance.

Being immersed in the culture of the country gives students a clear demonstration of the validity of the language they are learning. If one is able to use the language more readily then they will come to do so more easily. Some school trips abroad include interaction programmes with local schools which may make it easier for students to relate to the native people of the country and gain environmental awareness.

School trips abroad combine travelling with old friends while making new ones, and can create valuable experiences for a lifetime.
