Living in Brighton: How to practise your language skills outside of the classroom

Monday, 6th April 2009

The best way to learn a language is to build it into your every day life.

If you have chance, taking a language course abroad is a fantastic way to learn - not only will you be having lessons during the day but as soon as you step out of the classroom you have to put your new found skills to use.  But what about for those of us who don’t have the time, or budget, to spend a week or two abroad?

I have just come to the end of a 10 week Spanish evening course in Brighton and have found that the opportunities are all there to practise if you look for them:

Watching films
Jubilee Library offer a good selection of foreign language films to rent.  They also have a small section of foreign language literature too if you are feeling ambitious.

Take part in a language exchange

B:Lingual is an exchange evening, currently running at Western Front every Thursday from 20:00.  It costs £1 to attend and all you have to do is fill out a name label with the language you speak and the language you want to practise.  Alternatively head to the language section of Gumtree to find other people looking for conversation exchange or post your own advert.
