Learning Korean in America

Since the early 1990s there has been a noticeable growing need for Korean language evening courses in North America.

As the internationalization of South Korea, its companies, industries and people lie alongside American influence in Korea, the need for more bilingual businessmen and women has become highly significant.

America and Korea together have a very interesting history. The Korean community is the fifth largest of all the Asian groups across the United States today. Koreans first emigrated to the U.S. via Hawaii and kept moving further east to California and finally throughout the rest of the continental United States.

Today there are two Koreas – South and North. While there are many places in Asia that learn British English, for example Hong Kong, South Korea is influenced by American English and the American culture far more than Britain. One of the reasons for this is because of the Korean War and the resulting troops still being present in Korea.

After the Korean War, the United States placed initiatives which helped to transform South Korea economically. The American government encouraged democracy in South Korea by championing modernization and development in the country. This support by the Americans combined with the competitive culture in Korean academics and career orientation sees the demand for English language instruction in South Korea having virtually no end. From school children extending all the way to corporations, success in 21st century Korea comes by learning English. This demand is so great that offshore language learning services are the now the fastest growing outsource industry. It is an absolute that most Koreans who have good English skills get into better schools and land better jobs.

Americans teaching English in South Korea need to know the Korean language and understand the culture. One of the best ways to begin your journey teaching English in South Korea is to take up one of the many Korean language evening classes being offered across cities in North America today.
