Languages and employment: learning by example

"When the Pound devalues to the point that it suddenly becomes attractive for Brits to flock to Europe in search of work, we’ll need to make sure that our language skills are up to speed!"
This advice, offered by Richard Bradford in an article published in the Independent, is certainly something that people who are facing redundancy should consider.
British people are often pulled up on their linguistic inabilities, and although in the past this has been almost a light-hearted criticism, forming part of a national stereotype, it now seems that it is something that needs to be taken a little more seriously.
The article looks at the example set by so many of the Polish workers who have found jobs in the UK over the last few years, and how their linguistic accomplishments (coupled with strong work ethic and diligence) have ensured them not only employment, but advancements within that employment, and how this, in turn, has secured them stable, well-paid jobs and successful, long-term integration for as long as they want it.
