Foreign language films to look out for in 2010

It’s always a good idea to go and see films made in the foreign language you are studying.

This year, there’s no excuse for missing one - from Albania to Vietnam, foreign language films are out in force.

Many foreign language films are up for the almighty Hollywood Oscar. In particular, check out the thriller Un Prophète (A Prophet), from France. The film is set in a prison, where young and illiterate Malik El Djebena, the main character, becomes involved with the violent Corsican gang who ‘rule the roost’.

Another one to check out this year which has been submitted for the Hollywood statue is Germany’s “The White Ribbon”. This movie was just released last week so there won’t be many spoilers out there. The film is about a school set in the year 1913 and the main crux of the story is how school punishment is related to fascism.

Korea’s submission is entitled “Mother”. It is set to be released later this year. Another drama, it is about a mother who loyally supports her son who is accused of murder. This movie is playing in the Toronto International Film Festival and the New York Film Festival, and the actress who plays the lead character is said to be fantastic.

Although foreign language films show with subtitles in the United States and the UK, you can still learn a lot in a conversational subtext by listening to the dialogue and comparing it to the subtitles. Or you can try closing your eyes briefly while listening to the dialogue to see if you can translate without the subtitles. You will no doubt learn something about the native language by seeing a foreign language film.

I absolutely loved Un prophète! One of the best French films I have seen for a while!
