Conversation classes - a great way to retain your language skills
Wednesday, 22nd April 2009

There’s no doubt about it - learning how to speak a foreign language proficiently takes time, effort and patience. Believe it or not though, learning the language is not the hard part.
The hard part for people who are not living in a country where that language is spoken is to keep it up and ensure that these new found skills are not lost!
Often the only courses available for intermediate level speakers and above, are courses that are geared towards sitting an examination at the end (such as GCSE or A level), and this is not what everyone wants. Sure, you can watch foreign films and take trips abroad to practice your skills, but these can be sporadic and therefore limited in their effectiveness long-term.
The ideal solution is really to find a ‘inter-cambio’ type project, where you can meet native speakers of the language you have learnt on a regular basis, or to find a weekly conversation class to attend. Both of these options have traditionally been quite hard to come by, but conversation evening classes are now available in Italian, French, German, Portuguese and Spanish for anyone who lives within commutable distance to central London. Courses span 10 weeks and involve a two hour session each week.
Anyone wishing to test their language skills to see how much they can remember can complete one of our free online level tests - you might be pleasantly surprised…
