Saturday, 6th June 2009

As a place to visit and learn English, the UK has much to offer. It is not only the original home of the English language, but also the birth place of many world famous writers, artists, musicians, sportspeople and scientists.

It has large, cosmoplitan cities, interesting towns, pretty little villages, lively seaside resorts, areas of outstanding natural beauty, and numerous castles, stately homes and other historic buildings.

More than 1,500 English language courses are available at over 400 language schools, colleges and universities. The types of courses include general English, exam preparation, foundation courses for higher education, and specialist courses for teachers and other professionals. The majority of English language schools are found in London and along the south coast of England, so these are advisable options for anyone who prefers to be among large numbers of other overseas students.

During the summer there are festivals for all kinds of music and arts, the most famous of which is the Edinburgh International Festival. There are also sporting events, regattas and country fairs and shows, so it’s a great time to visit the country.

Getting to the UK is straightforward – there are flights from most parts of the world, and many cheap flights from all over Europe. There are ferries from a number of posts in France, Spain, the Netherlands and other countries, and you can also get there by train via the Channel Tunnel.

The UK has a comprehensive public transport network and a large road network which enable you to travel wherever you want to go. There are also plenty of internal flights, which are very handy if you want to visit distant parts of the country.

The UK’s climate is temperate and tends to be very changeable, so it’s best to be prepared for anything. During the summer temperatures can reach 30°C or even higher at times, and it tends to be several degrees warmer in the south than in the north of the country. Rain can be expected at any time throughout the year, and tends to be somewhat less frequent during the summer.

While it’s easy to spend a lot of money while visiting the UK, you don’t have to. It is possible to find budget accommodation, as well as good deals on tickets for trains, buses, theatres, concerts and other events. This year is a particulary good time for any foreigners to visit the UK given the favourable exchange rate that you will get - your money will go much further here than usual.
