Why choose Manchester for your English course?

Often described as England's 'second city', Manchester is a vibrant place to learn English

Many people have heard of Manchester, mainly thanks to the world-wide profile of Manchester United Football Club. However when choosing where to study, many students prefer to go to London or elsewhere in the south of England.

Manchester does have much to offer English learners. It’s the third largest city in the UK, after London and Birmingham, easy to get to, and close to some beautiful countryside, including the Lake District, Peak District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks. Manchester is a business and finance centre with a good selection of theatres, art galleries, cinemas and nightclubs, and is home to over 100,000 students who study at the three large universities in the city, or in local colleges.

There are regular flights to Manchester’s international airport from most parts of Europe and many others places. There are regular trains and coaches between Manchester and other parts of the UK – it’s only a few hours from London – and within Manchester you can get around easily and quickly on the buses, trains or trams.

Manchester has shops for every occasion, numerous restaurants serving food from all over the world, cafes and pubs, plenty of parks and gardens, and a world-famous music and nightclub scene. For football fans there are two major local teams – Manchester United and Manchester City, and there are plenty of other sports you can watch too. There are also excellent facilities for swimming, athletics and many other sports in and around Manchester.

Manchester’s English language schools offer general and business English courses, and a range of more specialised ones. The universities also run English language courses designed to prepare students for studying in an academic environment through the medium of English.

The language schools can arrange accommodation with local host families, or can help you find accommodation in hotels. The universities have their own residential accommodation. The schools also run varied programmes of activities and excursions which give you opportunities to explore the UK, to experience British life, and to get to know your fellow students.

The people of Manchester are friendly and are proud of their city and their history – the first canal, public library, computer with a stored memory, split atom and test tube baby all happened in Manchester.
