What’s the best way to learn a language post high-school in America?

Friday, 9th October 2009

If you’re looking to re-take the foreign language that you learned in high school, there are various places you can turn to within the United States.

For those well past the University ages of 18-22, you still have the option to join in with the sorority girls and sit in French class – but would you actually want to? Without meaning to generalize, those Phi Beta Deltas are probably more interested in getting their language credit in order to graduate than actually learning a language. The other fact of the matter is, going back to a University to re-take a language means you will be focused more on grammar than on conversation. This will not be so worthwhile if you are planning a trip to Paris and would like to order dinner in French and understand directions when they’re given to you by a Parisian.

University courses tend to be long – lasting from the middle of August to December for the first semester or from January to May for the second semester. Because the course is long and there are credits involved, University language learning tends to be expensive.

Of course one could look to a Community College to re-take a foreign language, but then we’re talking about disinterested students possibly looking for an approved credit than actually interested in learning the language itself.

The course that will help anyone looking for continuing education in a certain language is a weekly evening class, one that is for an hour and a half to two hours long. These are relatively inexpensive and because they are in the evening, after the workday is over, they are usually filled with people who are choosing to take the course - not because they have to, but because they want to. What better way to spend your money than to do it in environment where people actually want to learn! This can only benefit you when it comes to learning conversational language – most likely, your classmates will want to engage with you in your chosen language. So scrap the idea of going back to college and look up a Cactus course today.
