Why it's worth considering a Weekend TEFL course

Weekend TEFL courses are a great way to get an insight into what it’s like to teach English as a foreign language.

In the space of a weekend, you get to meet other people who are thinking about teaching English. You spend 20 hours in the presence of a qualified, experienced trainer, who will be able to give you a really good insight into what it’s actually like to teach. Finally, you’ll be able to learn something about how to teach, what the English language is all about, and have a go at standing up in front of other people and presenting to them.

There is a question in the industry about whether the weekend course should be accepted as a qualification to teach, or just a course you can go on to find out more. We would say that, even if it does lead to a certificate at the end, it’s more of a certificate of attendance than a true qualification. The truth is, though, that with demand around the world for English teachers being so high, you can find work with just a weekend TEFL course certificate. That still doesn’t make it a qualification, but simply reflects the fact that in many countries it’s quite enough to be a native English speaker with any degree, so that having done a Weekend TEFL course makes you stand out above anyone else that hasn’t done a Weekend TEFL course - if that makes sense.
