Visit Tenerife, the island of contrasts

Cactus' Joshua Gabriel reports back on his Spanish language course in Tenerife...

Think Tenerife and you could be forgiven for imagining football shirts and English bars serving fish ’n’ chips.

Okay, it’s like that in Playa de las Americas, but that resort only represents a small area of Tenerife. The island offers plenty of things to do that don’t involve swilling a pint of John Smith’s and watching football on Sky Sports.

It only took 3 hours to get to Tenerife from Gatwick, and everything went like clockwork on the Aerlingus flight I took.

I was amazed by the incredible variety of features that Tenerife has to offer. Within one day I was able to sunbathe on the beach, see the snow-capped peak of Mount Tiedes, as well walk around the historic town of La Orotava. Furthermore, in the north part of the island there is a lush, tropical landscape, which contrasts with the arid terrain of the south.

The local food represents a combination of traditional Spanish cuisine and Latin American and African ingredients, and is perfectly complemented with a glass of local wine.

Unfortunately, I was not in Tenerife for the Carnival which takes place in February - March. However, many say the Tenerife Carnival is the best outside of Brazil, I urge you to find out if they are correct!
