UK Study Destinations: Places That Put the ‘Great’ in Britain

Tuesday, 3rd February 2009

Britain is full of great places that haven’t yet made it on to the mainstream tourist trail.

In a way, the fact that they are not crowded with tourists and sightseers adds to their appeal, but it seems a shame not to share these lovely spots…

All of these cities are similar in that they are very pretty and historic, and really do represent the Britain of storybooks and cinema screens.

Many of these cities are conveniently modest in size, which saves money on public transport costs that may be incurred in larger cities. They also tend to have a friendlier feel about them, which perhaps makes it easier for foreign students to integrate into the local community during their stay.

Canterbury – This lovely city in the South East is home to a World Heritage site, encompassing its famous cathedral. It boasts hundreds of bars and restaurants and has a very cosmopolitan feel thanks to the many international students that its two universities and many language schools attract.

Chester – Located in the North West of England, Chester is a place that is steeped in history but that is also well-known for its modern and ultra-trendy shops and bars. It provides a great alternative to the bigger cities of Manchester and Liverpool.

Colchester – Situated in the county of Essex, Colchester holds the title of ‘Britain’s oldest recorded town’. It is surrounded by pretty countryside, and is very close to the East coast and its plethora of beaches.

Exeter – Nestled in the heart of Devon, one of England’s most picturesque counties, Exeter is a friendly university town that has something for everyone. The city is consistently hailed as one of the best places to live in Britain, and prides itself on having a low crime rate and a high quality of life.

Winchester– A small, picturesque city, Winchester is home to the oldest school in England. This prestigious establishment epitomises the city and the inhabitants that it homes. It is a wealthy place, and as such accommodates many a feature of the finer side of life, including designer boutiques, quaint English tea rooms and exclusive bars and brasseries.
