Senior French teacher at Cactus Eloïse Comert is offering Cactus students a chance to learn about the food, drink and culture of the beautiful Gard region of France…
Located in Sommières, a medieval village in the Gard region of southern France, this course offers students a unique chance to soak up the local ambience and to mix with the locals during visits and activities.
Accommodation
Students are accommodated in a beautiful house in the middle of the village or just next door at the cosy La Bistoure (see http://www.labistoure.fr). Bedrooms are for two people, so you may share the room as a couple or an extra bed is available if you are 2 single people.
Activities
1) Friday: Arrival in Sommières in the afternoon with some time to relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings which will be followed by a visit of this historic village. Then when the local culture has whetted your appetite, we head for a sumptuous dinner at the restaurant La Bistoure where we will enjoy a three course meal of local specialities and drink the fruits of the excellent local vineyards.
2) Saturday: An easy breakfast the French way will be followed a feast for the eyes and nose, shopping at the local open-air market for your lunch and the cooking classes; ‘déjeuner campagnard’ at the house; tour of the famous domaine Costes-Cirgues’ vineyards and olive grove (see http://costes-cirgues.com/bienvenue) followed by an opportunity to taste their wonderful wines; then return home for a cooking class at the house where you will learn how to make typical regional dishes bursting with flavour and then taste these fabulous dishes as you wash them down with the wines from Costes-Cirgues.
3) Sunday: Breakfast and relaxed picnic preparation at the house will be followed by a hearty walk organised by ‘La miellerie du Clairan’ – we depart from a local wine maker and arrive at a honey producer where we will enjoy our picnic with tea or coffee and try some of the tempting honey-based foods and give the wine of 5 local wineries a go; later there will be a cooking class at the house where you will be expertly guided even further into the glories of southern French cuisine and feast on the results!
4) Monday:Breakfast and return to London.
Price: £280 per person. The price includes all activities, accommodation, food/drinks, and transport in France. If you book as a couple or more, the price goes down to £250 per person.
Flight: You can fly with Easyjet & British Airways to Montpellier or Ryanair to Nîmes.
Option: If you would like to arrive on Saturday morning you can book a flight with Ryanair at 6:40am and you’ll arrive in Sommières on Saturday morning. The price will then go down to £190.
