The Winter Olympics 2010: an event to give Vancouver the attention it deserves

On February 12th, the Winter Olympics will officially begin. This year, it's Vancouver that will host this prestigious event - one that will attract athletes and spectators from all over the world.

Vancouver has long enjoyed a reputation as an attractive, vibrant and culturally diverse city, but the Winter Olympics will provide the perfect stage for it to show off exactly what it can offer.

Aside from the many exciting sporting attractions, including skiing, skating and ice hockey, there will also be cultural festivals and events for visitors to enjoy. Taking place under the banner ‘Cultural Olympiad 2010’, these events will include:

• theatre
• virtuoso dance
• music
• visual and digital art extravaganzas

No doubt one of the many reasons behind Vancouver’s selection as the 2010 Winter Olympics venue was the multicultural and multilingual nature of the city - with visitors from so many different countries, it is vitally important that the host city can accommodate their linguistic needs.

As with many Canadian cities, many of Vancouver’s inhabitants can speak both English and French, but it doesn’t stop there. The abundance of immigrant communities in the area means that many other languages are spoken every day too.

If the preparations are anything to go by, Vancouver looks set to host a magnificent Games, and will provide a great example for future cities to follow…
