I have always wanted to have work that allowed me to travel. The type of work that would allow me to do this always eluded me. Finally, I thought that teaching English as a second language was a great way to do it. One can travel and make cash while doing it. Not only that. One gets to really experience the culture and not just view it while passing by in a plush, 1st class tour bus.
Even though I could have applied immediately and found an ESL job with my undergraduate degree, I wanted to be a great English teacher, not just a mediocre one. I did my research, emailed everyone I thought could help, and eventually found out that the Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) is the best certificate to have on your resume.
Now was the question of where to take it. Since the CELTA is so well known and a popular training course to take, there were schools all around the world, including my hometown, which offered it. Then I found out that there was a school in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. For practically the same cost, I could take the CELTA there. And I am so glad I did. Playa Del Carmen in Mexico is paradise! Paradise obviously because of the weather, the Playa and, most of all, the people.
Charming, friendly and always welcoming, Playa Del Carmen was the perfect place to study hard to complete the rigorous CELTA. No matter what your academic background, this course will push you to realize your potential.
Grunt work, some elbow grease and lack of sleep will allow you to complete the course but being a team player will allow you to make life long friends and enjoy the course more than you have ever enjoyed any job or academic program.
The staff at International House Riviera Maya, are there for the students and each other 110%. Professional, supportive and extremely well educated, they will always greet you with a smile, even in week 3 of the course - whether it is the Director, the Receptionist or the Barista.
Now with the CELTA, I have the freedom to choose from the many positions offered to me and I automatically make more money than other teachers without a CELTA.
