Rekindle your language skills from yesteryear

Thursday, 9th April 2009

There are lots of people today who regret not getting further with their foreign language studies at school or university.

Discontinuing language classes at school age may perhaps have been down to the fact that the style of teaching, or even the teacher themselves at school did not suit, or possibly because there was no real reason (and therefore motivation) to learn a language at that stage of your life.

As many people get older, they often think about learning a language either for professional, personal or practical reasons relating to frequent travel abroad. Whatever the case, many people can feel hesitant about how they would fare in a language course environment, about how easy they would find it to learn, or how much they would be able to remember if they have already studied it in the past.

Evening language classes offer a very interactive and informal style of teaching, which is very different to more traditional methods that were used in secondary schools in the past. They account for all levels, and care is taken to ensure that students are studying in the correct level class so that no-one gets left behind.

For anyone who is rekindling language skills that were acquired at a younger age, the good news is that people are often pleasantly surprised at how much they can remember. It may take a couple of lessons to get back ‘in the zone’, but all the vocabulary that’s lurking at the back of your brain behind all those ‘to do’ lists from the last 10 years will definitely re-emerge!

Don’t believe me? Here are two ways to see for yourself:

- Come along to one of our language taster sessions as part of the Brighton Fringe festival in May – you can chat informally to the teachers about the evening courses on offer, and even take part in a lesson to see how you get on.

- Have a go at one of our online level tests and see how much you can remember!
