Learning Spanish in Cadiz

Lara Gabriel shares her experience of taking a language course in the lovely Andalucian city of Cadiz...
We arrived in the evening and although it was already dark the charm and relaxed atmosphere of Cadiz was clearly visible. We were met at the airport by Israel, one of the directors of the language school and on the drive to the town he told us a little about the town: ‘Great food, lots of beaches and lots of parties!’ The description alone excited me but the first night left us struggling to order food and searching for a place to have a beer! Once we found our bearings that all changed.
We only had a week of Spanish lessons but I probably learnt more than one year of French lessons in the English education system. The teachers, Ali and Carmen were great and had their teaching techniques down to a tee. The situation was incredibly amusing, six faces staring blankly at the patient teacher whilst they repeated the same question over and over again. When we finally got the answer everyone cheered!
We swapped numbers with the others in our class immediately after the first lesson and we all met for dinner and drinks each night. I would have no hesitation about going on another language holiday by myself as everyone is so friendly, especially after a few glasses of tinto de verano.
Whilst we weren’t studying we also found time to relax on the beach, wander round the old streets of Cadiz and sit in Plaza’s drinking coffees and wondering if the kids ever went to bed. Cadiz was big enough not to feel claustrophobic but small enough to know your way around after a week… although we never did find the salsa club!
