Learning for love: Swedish courses in London
Wednesday, 18th March 2009

This term we have seen a large growth in the number of students taking Swedish, Turkish and Czech courses in London.
We asked some of our students of Swedish what their motivations are for taking an evening course. What makes them battle across Central London on the tube through the dark winter nights to get to their class every week?
Students replies came in thick and fast and it seems that there is one factor that motivates them more than any other:
“I put it down to the fact that the Swedes are a good looking lot. Like everyone else on the course, my partner is Swedish.”
“My other half is Swedish and I spend a substantial amount of time in Sweden.”
“I am learning because my husband is Swedish. Most people appear to be learning for similar reasons. Maybe there are simply more Swedes in London now, marrying UK people!”
“My girlfriend is Swedish so I thought it would be nice to learn the language.”
“My reason for taking the course is purely personal - my mother is Swedish and I spend time there visiting family.”
So it seems that French and Italian are no longer the languages of love, if you’re looking for everlasting happiness you’d best get learning Swedish!
