The differing cultures of English-speaking people around the world

English is spoken as a native language in many countries all over the world. There are differences between the varieties of English spoken in different countries and regions, and also differences in the cultures of English-speaking people.

In the UK there many regional variations in culture, particularly between England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, however there are some aspects of culture that are shared throughout the country. These include a sense of humour with an emphasis on word play, self-deprecation, satire and irony; low expectations; eccentricity, and a reluctance to complain or make a fuss. Popular pastimes in the UK include going to pubs, eating out, watching television, and watching or taking part in sports.

In Ireland music is very popular, both traditional Irish music and rock, pop and other styles. Social life tends to revolve around pubs, and there are sessions involving music, singing and sometimes dancing in many pubs. They are either arranged in advance, or just happen spontaneously. Sport is also very popular in Ireland, especially Gaelic Football, and even the smallest villages usually have their own teams. The Catholic church also plays a major part in life in Ireland, though this role has diminished in recent years.

American culture in the form of films, music and sport can be seen and heard all over the world. Americans tend to be individualistic, ambitious, competitive, hospitable, friendly and hard-working. Popular leisure pursuits include watching TV and films, and watching and playing sports such as baseball, American football and basketball. Many Americans travel within the USA, but relatively few venture overseas.

In Australia watching and participating in sport is very popular, especially cricket, rugby and Australian rules football. Other outdoor activities, such as hiking and sailing are also popular. Australians tend to be friendly and informal, and are keen on travel. They also tend to be modest and underplay achievements and skills.

New Zealanders have much in common with Australians in terms of their liking for sport, mainly rugby, the outdoors and travel. They also tend to be informal and outgoing, though can be somewhat reserved with people they don’t know.

English is one of 12 official languages in South Africa and is used throughout the country as the language of government and the lingua franca between the many different ethnic groups. Due to the ethnic diversity of the country, it is difficult to generalise about the culture, however white English speakers have a way of life quite similar to Australians and New Zealanders.
