Be Seduced By Tango in Buenos Aires
Monday, 29th December 2008

February is the month to be in Argentina's buzzing capital as it plays host to the International Tango Festival
Complex, raw and sensual, tango is at once a story of repression, passion and longing. It is ingrained in the Argentine identity and has constituted a rich component of the capital’s social scene for years. From impromtu displays on street corners to fashionable ‘milongas’ at dance venues and grand shows in sumptuous ballrooms, tango is danced in Buenos Aires like nowhere else.
Argentina’s buzzing capital therefore makes the perfect place to see tango at its best, hosting the annual Buenos Aires International Tango Festival each Spring. A true feast of tango classes, live music, exhibitions, displays and concerts, for the amateur right through to the professional, this is a week to see, learn, practise and admire. Be twirled around the dance floor by a local or simply lose yourself in the magic of it all as you wander from district to district and become enveloped in the sights and sounds of Argentina’s national dance.
Festival dates for 2009 are 27th February to 8th March - a perfect time of year to be in Buenos Aires, the heat and bustle of mid-summer just past but the days still long and warm.
Cactus runs Spanish & Tango Courses in Buenos Aires year-round, with optional accommodation in a host family or shared apartment. Speaking from first-hand experience, this is a unique way to get a taste of this sophisticated dance form in the most stunning setting - an elegant, old, mirrored salon - and come back with more than a click in your heel.
