Academic year courses in the UK

Many people argue that the only way to become proficient in a language is to spend a substantial period of time in a country where it is spoken. If this period abroad can be combined with language lessons, even better.

A great option for many learners of English, therefore, is to sign up for an ‘academic year’ course in the UK, or another English-speaking destination.

Academic-year courses are open to all students, but are especially useful for anyone interested in applying to a UK university and achieveing an IELTS qualification in order to do so.

The courses normally last either 24, 36, or 48 weeks and normally consist of 15 hours of English tuition per week. The great thing about these courses is that they offer a timetable that enables students to be able to work in their free time.  Working not only boosts students’ ability to practise the language, but it also gives them an all-important cultural insight into life in Great Britain.

EU citizens have flexibility in terms of how many hours they choose to work outside of lessons, but non-EU citizens coming to the UK with a student visa can work a maximum of 20 hours per week.

Academic-year courses in English are currently available in a number of UK destinations, including: Bournemouth, Brighton, Cambridge, Edinburgh, London and Oxford.
