Client FeedbackBelow you can browse a range of feedback from courses taken in the UK and abroad. We also have a selection of more detailed Case Studies. Chinese in London (UK)Charlotte Wybrew - Chinese in London "I have been very pleased with the training I've received from
Jenny - she is English in Brighton (UK)Claude Wurmsdobler, KCC - English in Brighton for Kimberly Clark (24h course) Claude Wurmsdobler is French and works in the finance department of Kimberly Clark European Headquarters. Upon her request, the KCC training specialist arranged 24 hours of English language training in order to improve her performance and confidence within the office environment in general and specifically in meetings with her boss. Claude takes her tuition on a weekly basis at the Cactus training rooms. This is her feedback: Q: What were your first impressions? A: "My first Lesson was very interesting. I had the possibility to express myself in a natural manner, with excellent guidance and good mutual understanding. With this teacher I find the right level of discussion and the help I need." English in DenmarkJan Henrik Ardenkjaer-Larsen is Danish and required English language training for his two children in Denmark, prior to the family relocating to the US in August 2004. Here are Jan's comments prior to the move: "We are very happy with the English teaching. The teacher is great and the children are learning from and enjoying the lessons. We are moving on August 29th and the children will start school on Sept 8th. I do not think there is any need for continued additional English teaching in the US. The school in the US has special classes for foreign students and adjust the lessons accordingly. So, I hope it will be a good start for them. These three weeks of intensive English teaching have been tremendous for them." English in LondonOdile is a Merchandising Assistant for Burberry of French nationality. Her job involves talking to suppliers on the telephone and to staff in all their shops - who have many different accents. Her line manager enquired on her behalf to arrange language training to help her to understand and be understood by her international colleagues. Odile had a 24 hour course, taken in 2 hourly sessions on a weekly basis. The course took place in her office in central London. "I am really satisfied by the language course I am doing with Cactus. Deborah is always trying to tailor the course to my needs. We are mainly working on the speaking language (pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, ...). Then she corrects my mistakes and we are going through each point together. The course is really tailored to my needs and very flexible. It's very useful and It's meeting my expectations." English in Salford (UK)Han Ching Ong works as a researcher at Salford University. She has booked 60 hours of advanced individual English tuition with Cactus. She is an ongoing student and has confirmed that she will continue her tuition with Cactus. Here is her feedback at around 55 hours. Q: How do you feel about your current level of English, compared to when you started the course? A: I feel that my pronunciation has improved quite significantly, however I still have problems speaking fluently in public. Both my tutors think that it is due to my confidence instead of the level of my english. Q: How have you found the lessons, on the whole? Are one-to-one classes an effective way to learn a language? A: Yes, one-to-one classes seem to help, but I was wondering if it'd make any difference if I was in a group? Would it increase my confidence or would it make it worse? Q: What are your impressions of the trainer as a professional? A: Yes, both trainers are good. Q: What are your impressions of Cactus Language Training? Have we provided enough support? A: Yes, I have my lessons at my home which is very convenient. French in LondonJoe Warren works for a leading internet service provider and wanted to hone his skills in French to take an externally-validated exam, the TCF - Test de Connaissance du Français. He required a flexible formula of lessons that could be started rapidly to prepare him for this exam, and where a qualified trainer could come to his office after work. This is his feedback: "I asked Cactus for language tuition to help me attain a certain level at the TCF French assessment test. I chose Cactus because I had limited time of my own to plan how to improve my level of French to meet the requirements of this test and I had difficulty finding tuition elsewhere for this test within the timescales. My tutor Virginie came to the first lesson armed with the necessary materials and drew up a plan of how to improve my rusty French. Virgine was a very good tutor, coming to each lesson with a thorough plan and teaching materials, useful comments on my homework and an enthusiasm for teaching the language. Her quality of teaching was excellent and I saw a very substantial improvement in my level of French over a period of 6 weeks. Having a teacher visit me at work was also very convenient." Joe has also offered to be a referee, so please let us know if you would like to contact him to find out more about his thoughts on the course and on Cactus Language Training in general. French in Milton Keynes (UK)Janet Nudds booked 100 hours of French tuition in order to improve and build upon her knowledge of French to an extent that she could use this productively in business. She was taught by one trainer - Claude Chappe. The training took place on a flexible basis over a one year period at Janet's home in Milton Keynes. This was her feedback towards the end of her course. "In recent months I set myself up as a consultancy and the French secured me my first assignment which was good and was indeed one of the reasons for the training. Claude and I worked on some very specific vocabulary for the work I did in Paris and it was really useful preparation as I ended up not only doing the work but acting as a translator for 2 colleagues I had with me who of course spoke no French at all! So I am still firmly rooted in the UK I am afraid, although I am doing some overseas travel for work and will be doing some more European and global assignments in 2005." French in the UKNicky Seadon is working at an international school in Khartoum in the Sudan as an English teacher. Living and working there means that she needs to speak French in order to fulfill her work role successfully and to be able to survive in the country in which she lives. Nicky booked 8 hours of intensive French tuition whilst on a visit back to the north east of England. This was her feedback. Q: How do you feel about your current level of French, compared to previously? A: It is not easy to see an immediate improvement in one's level of French when one is working at quite a high level. Through the lessons I have had so far (2 x 2 hours) I have had lots of practice at listening and speaking, am gaining in confidence, have picked up some new phrases and have become more aware of certain errors in my spoken French. Q: How did you find the lessons, on the whole? Are one-to-one classes an effective way to learn a language? A: The lessons have been fine, and I definitely appreciate one-to-one classes, as they require my full concentration and participation. Q: What are your impressions of the trainer as a professional? A: He is very competent, a genuine linguist, and is always concerned to ensure that the classes are covering the areas that I wish them to cover. I have found discussing various topics with him - largely to do with education and politics - both interesting and enlightening, as he has his own definite views to share and shows an interest in hearing my point of view. He makes an effort to write up and send to me by email notes on the lessons, covering miscellaneous points of grammar and phraseology which have cropped up in our discussions. Q: What are your impressions of Cactus Language Training? Did we provide enough support? A: I have been very happy with the way in which you have arranged the lessons for me. Yes, you did provide enough support. Q: Are you currently considering booking a continuation course? A: These 8 hours of lessons are something of a one-off arrangement, as I am in Britain only for a limited time and will be returning shortly to the country where I work (Sudan). I would, however, consider booking lessons with you again at some stage in the future, as you have provided exactly what I was seeking. French in Solihull (UK)Peter Crossen and two of his colleagues booked an intensive 30hr week course of French with Cactus. The course took place at their offices in Solihull and the training was given by two native speaker French trainers. "The course went as planned and the tutors were excellent. They seemed to work well together. Michel's lesson was very well structured, he focused on the materials with the use of the video and Carole's lesson had a free format as she let us speak conversationally. One of the key reasons that Carole was with us all day Friday was that we had allocated Friday as a free format day. They also had nightly conversations to keep each other informed of where they got to and what was covered... it was seamless!" "Unfortunately Brian's wife was taken ill so he had to miss the program from Tuesday onwards. Steve (CEO) felt as though he recalled what he had covered years ago and the latter end of the week was pushed to learn more." "In terms of Cactus and your role... it has been 1st class... you always kept me informed with regular emails and phone calls and nothing was too much trouble - thank you. We are now looking to put the language into practice and work with our French colleagues." German in Amersham (UK) & SwitzerlandJo Fox enrolled on 100 hours of training funded by a relocation package from her husband's employers. Jo took 20 hours of German tuition at her home in Amersham with a Swiss-German trainer, Daniel, and now she is in Switzerland where we have organised subsequent training for her with her trainer Harry. This was Jo’s feedback after her first 20 hours tuition in the UK. "Thank you for responding so quickly. Our stay in Switzerland has got off to a tremendous start. A big contributory factor for me has been the excellent training in German and Swiss German that I received from Daniel - with a lot of laughter, I gained a useful kick start to my German and some basic grounding in Swiss German. Many thanks to him for his hard work and his very flexible attitude!" This was Jo’s feedback towards the end of her 100 hour course in Switzerland. Q: How do you feel about your current level of Swiss German, compared to when you started the course? A: My understanding of spoken and “written” (albeit that there is no right way to write it, the books do try!) Swiss German has really improved and I can understand most of what is said around me. I do struggle sometimes with responding with the right noun or verb and have really plateaued in this and so have made a commitment this summer to just sit down and learn the next level of vocabulary. Q: How have you found the lessons, on the whole? Are one-to-one classes an effective way to learn a language? A: I have really enjoyed my lessons with Harry and am sure that one to one is essential for effective learning. I had done two years of high German at school, but we had learnt it as a grammatical exercise rather than a language to speak - so I had learnt lists eg bis durch fur gegen ohne um. I had a solid base, but had some gaps in my memory and needed to work out how the words translated into Swiss German eg gegen bdcomes gaga. I am also a visual learner and most teachers of Swiss German seem to think that it will sink in through oral repetition, not least because there isn’t an accepted way of writing the words. This did not work for me and Harry was happy to be flexible on this. He has used a variety of different books, video and news stories with supporting homework and has always made it challenging. Q: What are your impressions of the trainer as a professional? A: I would happily recommend him for Swiss German or High German, indeed he teaches my boys High German now for half an hour a week. He makes learning fun, regularly changes the method of learning and is full of praise. He is rarely late, but is generous with his time and support. He usually teaches beyond the allotted hour and has even visited without charge to help me sort out a particularly difficult problem with the telephone company when their engineer called for the third time. Q: What are your impressions of Cactus Language Training? Have we provided enough support? A: You have been supportive throughout, but in particular in successfully finding a Swiss German teacher to teach me before I left the UK so that I had some knowledge when we landed. Q: Are you currently considering booking a continuation course? A: I also have a Swiss German buddy who I meet weekly for half an hour of English and half an hour of Swiss German chat, so I won't be considering a continuation course. German in ZurichJohn Fox works for Coutts and has a relocation package of 100 hours of language training. He is studying German in Zurich and takes his tuition in his office. John has had approximately 30 hours of language training at this point. This is his feedback: "Helga is teaching me useful and practical German with which I am becoming more comfortable. My vocab is expanding and my comprehension has improved greatly. Helga's style suits me well and she approaches the lessons in a professional and well prepared way. Helga has been a great tutor this year and I look forward to more of the same in 2005." Hindi in DelhiEvangelos Apostoplou relocated from the UK to India by his employer BT. He and his wife are taking Hindi lessons separately - Evangelos at the office, Magda at home funded by his employer. Neelam is excellent. A model teacher in many ways. She has a great deal of experience and is also patient, flexible and punctual.
Italian in LondonSara Jubb works for News International. She had been learning Italian with the help of self study books. Her need to take individual tailor-made Italian lessons is of mainly a personal nature - she travels to Italy frequently, spends many holidays there and is considering moving to Italy to live and work there at some stage in the future. This was her feedback almost halfway through her 60 hour language course.
"I am loving the course. I feel that my Italian has really improved, although the more I study the more I realise how much more I need to do!
Elena is a great teacher and I think we work really well together as we share a love of language and grammar, which I think makes things enjoyable and easier for us both. I love the fact that she has been able to adapt the course to suit my needs and interests and that she introduces extra things for me to do on my own, such as watching DVDs of Italian movies and reading newspaper articles. It doesn't feel at all like a chore, but something that I really want to do and that I enjoy doing.
I am really happy with the course and delighted that I contacted Cactus. Thank you." Julia Glidden is the MD of Accenture e-Democracy Services. She took a 30 hour Italian course, consisting of 2 hourly sessions, and required flexible arrangements regarding the days and times of her sessions. "Good to speak with you today. Grazia was fabulous! We hit it off straight away, and I couldn't be happier. Also, it seems as though my Spanish is standing me in good stead as she doesn't seem to think I am an absolute beginner of Italian!! Many thanks for sending me the best!" Francois Lazzari works for Fedex and has been studying Italian on an individual basis at his office in north London. Here is his feedback towards the end of his first course (of 45 hours) Q: How do you feel about your current level of Italian, compared to when you started the course? A: My level of Italian has slowly increased as I’ve noticed I’ve got more difficulties pronouncing than before. This is due to the fact that I practice the language less than I did back in Belgium and has got nothing to do with the course or trainer in itself. I feel that more reading aloud in Italian would help. Q: How have you found the lessons, on the whole? Are one-to-one classes an effective way to learn a language? A: Lessons are great and one-to-one is the best way for me to learn a language. Q: What are your impressions of the trainer as a professional? A: Trainer is very good and always comes prepared. Very punctual too! Q: What are your impressions of Cactus Language Training? Have we provided enough support? A: Cactus Language Training is a very flexible. I enjoy the fact that the trainer can travel to my home. Q: Are you currently considering booking a continuation course? Please let me know if you would like to receive a proposal with a 5% repeat booking discount. A: Yes, I am planning on continuing with Cactus in the coming months.
I will inform you of this in the coming months once my request has been
approved by my employer. Italian in Manchester (UK)Stephanie Hares needed to learn Italian before moving to Italy for a year. She studied on both a Cactus open group beginners course in Manchester followed by an individual course with Cactus. This was the feedback at the end of her individual course. Q: How do you feel about your current level of Italian, compared to when you started the course? A: I definitely have progressed significantly and at a fast pace. I feel comfortable holding a conversation and having been to Italy since I finished my lessons and was pleased with my abilities to speak. Q: How have you found the lessons, on the whole? A: Very useful and enjoyable. Q: Are one-to-one classes an effective way to learn a language? Yes, I was surprised at how much we were able to cover and having one-to-one classes enabled me to develop a bond with my teacher making progress easier and the lessons more enjoyable. Also, I felt that I was able to have a very strong input into the content and direction of my lessons, which was useful since I am learning Italian for the specific purpose of studying there. Q: What are your impressions of the trainer as a professional? A: I was very pleased with my trainer, she struck the right balance between instructing and encouraging me. There was a relaxed atmosphere and I didn't feel pressured or embarrassed in the lessons, so I was able to progress more quickly. Q: What are your impressions of Cactus Language Training? Have we provided enough support? A: I have been very impressed with Cactus, both with the initial booking and the speed and efficiency with which my individual lessons were set up and with all the correspondence I have had with you. I would certainly recommend Cactus to others. Q: Are you currently considering booking a continuation course? A: No, as I am going to Italy to study for a year. Thanks very much for all your help and if I decide to take up a language in the future or further my italian I will certainly be returning to Cactus. Italian in Milan, ItalyGlen Carter had 100 hours of individual Italian language training funded for him as a relocation package to Milan, Italy. Cactus arranged for two trainers to go to his office and home in Milan to teach him Italian over the course of several months. Q: How do you feel about your current level of Italian, compared to when you started the course? A: 100 hours completed already! It seems like only yesterday. I think my Italian is OK - I can certainly hold a conversation when needed and am able to attend meetings and both listen and participate (although more listening than participating at this stage!) Q: How have you found the lessons, on the whole? Are one-to-one classes an effective way to learn a language? A: I would not take a two week intensive course so early next time - I think a couple of months' lessons and then an intensive course would work better. For me, one to one lessons are perfect because they allow me to ask questions about the structure of the language/vocabulary in comparison with other languages and that helps in the learning process for me. In my experince 90 minute lessons are best - I started with 2 hours and found this to be too draining and intensive. Q: What are your impressions of the trainer as a professional? A: Cinzia was an excellent trainer - not always the most patient but very thorough. Claudia was one of the best language teachers I have ever had for any language. She appears to know her pupils' weaker areas and knows how to make them practise the right things. She encourages at the right times and does not correct immediately: this encourages her puplis to 'self-correct' and feel comfortable with learning with her, rather than constantly feeling as if they are making mistakes and being corrected. From the content of the lessons it is also very clear that Claudia puts a lot of thought and preparation into her lessons. For me, her explanation of grammar (and also idioms) is perfect - she makes the language logical and yet fun to learn. Q: Are you currently considering booking a continuation course? A: I intend to continue reading and practising alone as the length of my assignment is unclear - if I require further training or one-to-one teaching, I will let you know however. I have been impressed with both teachers that you have provided! Italian in Norwich (UK)John & Jeanne Morgan have been holidaying in Italy for years and have a love of the country and the language. This is the feedback they gave towards the end of their 2: 1 lessons with a Cactus trainer Chiara in Norwich. Q: How do you feel about your current level of Italian, compared to when you started the course? A: We have enjoyed our ten sessions with Chiara and found it most beneficial. Q: How have you found the lessons, on the whole? Are one-to-one classes an effective way to learn a language? A: It has been a combination of talk in Italian with periods of instruction in grammar. We have also been given homework exercises to keep us going between lessons. Q: What are your impressions of the trainer as a professional? A: Chiara is an excellent teacher. We were delighted you were able to obtain her services, as we had private sessions with her before in a group and wanted a period of more intense talk not possible in a group. Q: Are you currently considering booking a continuation course? A: Thanks for the offer of a futher course, but we will probably join a local authority group next winter. Q: What are your impressions of Cactus Language Training? Have we provided enough support? A: We have been delighted with Cactus and willing to recomend it to anyone interested. Japanese in LondonRyan Collins works for Royal Bank of Scotland and has a relocation package of 100 hours of language training. He is studying Japanese in London before moving to Tokyo. He takes his tuition in his office. Ryan is at the beginning of his course and has had approximately 10 hours of language training at this point. This is his feedback: "I am really enjoying the classes with Asami. At the moment I'm finding it quite easy as we're mostly refreshing my memory on a few concepts I covered at university - though the Kanji is new material. The books are excellent - thank you for those. I especially like the Kanji book and the way it explains each character. Asami's teaching style is very good. Each session is well broken up into conversation, reading and writing - no complaints there. I might ask if we can step it up to twice a week so I can get a bit of a blast before heading out to Japan again in May." Mandarin in Hong KongGareth Owen works for the Royal Bank of Scotland and is studying Mandarin in Hong Kong. He has a relocation package of 100 hours of language training. He has had approximatley a third of his training allowance so far. This is his feedback: "I'm really enjoying the classes and wish I had more time to study. Flora has been very good and I hope that in the new year my schedule will settle down so I can devote more time to studying." Mandarin in Newcastle (UK)Graham Clark works for Rayovac in Washington, close to Newcastle. His company are relocating him and his wife to China for 2 years. The HR department of his company arranged coss-cultural and linguistic Mandarin training for both Graham and his wife. Rayovac approached Cactus a couple of weeks before the training was due to begin. The spec given to Cactus was that the training schedule had to be flexible to fit in with the working schedules of two people, and was to continue until they left the country. Q: How do you feel about your current level of Mandarin and your knowledge of Chinese culture? A: The lessons have given us both a good grounding in the language and culture. Q: How have you found the lessons, on the whole? Are two-to-one classes an effective way to learn a language? A: Yes, the lessons were well prepared and the two-to-one situation allows good interaction. Q: What are your impressions of the trainer as a professional? A: Very good. Min was pleasant and relaxed but had the motivation to ensure we both properly understood what she was teaching us. The lessons were well prepared. Q: What are your impressions of Cactus Language Training? Have we provided enough support? A: It is difficult for me to comment on this as I did not make direct contact. I was surprised that no set books were part of the programme. Q: Are you considering booking a continuation course? A: No, thank you. I/we leave for China in the next few days! Mandarin in Solihull (UK)A group of employees at Ove Arup Partners are studying Mandarin. The participants' current knowledge of Mandarin is of beginner level, and the need to take Mandarin lessons is of business nature. Arup is a global firm of designers, engineers, planners and business consultants. This training is for a group of engineering consultants who are frequently involved with Chinese companies. The Business is done in English, but speaking Chinese will improve business relationships and make the communication with business partners easier outside official meetings. Here was their mid course feedback.
The Chinese lessons are working well. Xiao Mai has kept us all busy and I believe that we are starting to learn both the spoken and the written language. As expected we never seem to be able to get everyone to the lessons due to work commitments. We seem to be averaging 8-9 pupils. We cancelled the lesson this week when the number of attendees would have dropped to 6. I expect that we will cancel a couple more during August for holidays. Overall I am happy with the service we are getting. Everyone is enjoying the lessons - they are very informal and we have a laugh which is important. Homework level is pushing us a bit, as it should. Norwegian Weekend Crash Course (UK)Susan and her partner have a passion for Norway and visit it regularly. They had begun studying the language themselves fairly successfully using self-study packages. Having reached an elementary Level with the language, they felt their passive knowledge was greater than their ability to speak. They wanted the opportunity to practice and learn Norwegian from a Norwegian native speaker trainer in order to assimilate all they already knew and to move forward with their language learning. This was Susan's feedback: "Thanks very much for arranging the Norwegian course with Iki for us. It was absoultely perfect! It has enabled us to use our knowledge of Norwegian vocabulary in correct, useful sentences. She has also enabled us to go beyond set phrases into simple converstaion. Iki was ideal as a teacher because she was flexible enough to respond to our our small amount knowledge and to build upon it." Russian in Manchester & Czech in the Czech RepublicKatrin Michaels works for Air Products PLC and Cactus arranged her course of 10 hrs of advanced Russian in Manchester and 20 hours of Russian in Prague, Czech Republic, prior to relocating to Czech Republic where much of her business would be in Russian. Katrin was due to continue Russian classes (20 hrs) in the Czech Republic, but when she arrived she discovered the office had already arranged group Russian classes, so she switched her tuition to beginners Czech. Cactus accommodated all her needs and this was her feedback towards the end of her course in Czech Republic: Q: How do you feel about your current level of Czech, compared to when you started the course? A: Looking at the fact that I have only had 4 or 5 lessons I am very satisfied. I understand a lot more and can say the first simple phrases. Q: How have you found the lessons, on the whole? Has there been enough emphasis on communication? A: There was definitely enough emphasis on communication. Zuzana tried to really look at what I need to learn, but I have to say that learning Czech is very difficult and I also need time to just sit down and learn things. Q: What are your impressions of the trainer as a professional? A: The trainer seems very professional. The level is great, as we do a lot of grammar and vocabulary in each section. Also, as I can only meet every two weeks, I have time to practise these things in between. Q: What are your impressions of Cactus Language Training? Have we provided enough support? A: Yes, definitely. I always got a reply back very soon and knew where we are. It was very good that I could split this course between the UK and Praha and even change languages. This was very convenient and exactly what I needed. Q: Are you currently considering booking a continuation course? A: I would like to, but it will depend on how long I stay in the Czech Republic. I will hopefully find out soon. Spanish in DublinJohn had individual tailor-made Spanish tuition in Dublin. He was a beginner when he started the course and is learning Spanish as he owns a property in Spain. The long term aim is to become a confident and effective speaker and be able to talk about a wide range of subjects and interests in a social and informal environment. Q: How do you feel about your current level of Spanish, compared to when you started the course? A: My Spanish is still very basic. This is due to the difficulty I have in learning a new language as opposed to the way I am being taught. I can listen and understand basic Spanish but have a lack of confidence in speaking the language - this is due to a lack of confidence in my ability and will pass with time. What the course has given me is the foundation to move forward and techniques for learning. Q: How have you found the lessons, on the whole? Are one-to-one classes an effective way to learn a language? A: Very good, very effective. I have 1 lesson per week. I think to be more effective I would need to have at leat 2 per week or have exposure to the Spanish language through the week. Additional support for finding other resources would be of use, e.g. a list of recommended books, CDs, internet links, etc. This would allow the student to have a lesson and investigate other sources of learning. Q: What are your impressions of the trainer as a professional? A: Samantha has been excellent. She is smart, on time and gives advance warning of any changes. Q: What are your impressions of Cactus Language Training? Have we provided enough support? A: Very good. Q: Are you currently considering booking a continuation course? A: I finish working in Dublin at the end of July. When I come back to London I will probably try class based learning to see how I get on in a group situation. Having completed your course I will feel much more confident about doing this. Spanish & Japanese in LondonEmily Ackroyd works for L'Oréal UK in London and took part in tailor made corporate language training sessions in both Spanish and Japanese. "I want to say thank you, the day went really well and we had some fantastic feedback, in particular about the Spanish and Japanese classes. I was able to attend Japanese myself and I thought the teacher was excellent, and really rose to the challenge of getting something meaningful across in such a short space of time. Well done, it was really excellent." Turkish in LondonSophie Biagioli works for HSBC in London and required a tailor made one-to-one Turkish language course to prepare for her relocation to the country. "I would also be most grateful if you could pass on my sincere thanks to Ashley and Emily - they have both been fantastic at helping me to organise my Turkish lessons. Ashley was particularly good at keeping me updated with the progress of my initial quote and this great communication was probably one of the main reasons I decided to go with Cactus rather than another language provider. Emily was very reliable also, ensuring that my lessons were scheduled quickly with Nusra. I have already started to recommend Cactus to my friends here at HSBC and also outside of the workplace, because I would definitely consider using your company again if all the employees and teachers are like Ashley, Emily and Nusra.."
