Cactus appears on Five News!

Posted by Lucy under In the Press, Learning a language

Following a story in the national press yesterday about how Spanish has officially overtaken German in popularity for language learners in schools, Cactus teachers appeared on prime time TV last night to discuss the news.

The report from CILT shows that 75 per cent of state schools are now offering Spanish compared with 67 per cent offering German. The number of schools offering Italian has also doubled in the past two years, while Mandardin has risen from 4 to 14 per cent.

Gerhard Gall and Natalia Nin were interviewed by Isla Torquair at Five News and asked to defend their respective languages. The interview was light-hearted and informal, with both teachers saying ‘I love you’ in German and Spanish to prove which language sounds the most romantic.

Isla also asked why German was a less popular option, with Gerhard brilliantly pointing out that events like the recent world cup in Germany have actually boosted popularity for German culture and language. Natalia also answered questions about Spanish really eloquently, making it a great interview and good national news exposure for Cactus!

Interesting news. Obviously, in the end Spanish is most
likely to win the race because the emerging markets become
stronger. Worldwide the Spanish speaking population is
growing much faster than the German speaking population
    (Germany, Austria and Switzerland).
