Learning German, valentines in the way - week 5

Posted by tristan under Language Courses UK

This week I had planned to be all caught up and in the class, but I had to take the week off for a valentines dinner with my girlfriend. So I traded he that she would have to do a lesson of practice with me at the weekend.

Back at it next week, promise.

I once tried teaching English to my (now) ex-french-(slightly-psychopath) girlfriend. It was a disaster. Even though I was a trained English teacher, and she asked for help, it just didn’t work out. We bought books, CDs etc etc but nothing did it. There was something fundamental about the fact that you’re in a relationship, and being in another teacher-student relationship at the same time knocks the primary relationship out of kilter.

I’d be interested to know how you get on with this, and whether there are any ways of guaranteeing success. Maybe it’s just the French, but I’ve heard of other failures, and that the dominant language just prevails.

    Thoughts?

I think its hard for my girlfriend, but maybe because she is German too. She is very keen that I get the pronunciation right first time, very German and precise even though she is very nice and relaxed with her English. It makes for good practice.
