Worldwide language learning events for your diary in 2010

A variety of events that might be of interest to language learners will be taking place in 2010.

There are numerous conferences, conventions, exhibitions and other events for language learners, teachers, academics, translators and others involved with languages, as well as summer schools for specific languages. Here is a selection of these events:

From 8th-11th April 2010 the Global Language Convention will take place at Wesley College in Melbourne, Australia. This convention brings together language experts, teachers and policy makers from all over the world to discuss such topics as language learning and teaching, literature, language loss and revival, and language policy.

For those interested in learning or brushing up their Croatian, there’s the Little Summer School of Croatian Language, Culture and Civilization at the University of Zagreb in Croatia from 21st June to 21st July 2010. As well as the language classes there are visits to theatres and museums, and excursions to other places of interest.

From 12th July – 2nd August 2010 there is a Russian Language Summer School at Tallinn University in Estonia. The Russian language lessons are supplemented by a cultural programme of excursions, tours and visits to museums and concerts, as well as a study tour to Saint Petersburg. Tallinn University also runs a course in Estonian Language and Culture in July.

Oideas Gael in Donegal, Ireland runs an Irish language and culture school at the end of July each year – it will be from 24th to 31st July in 2010. This involves Irish language lessons in the mornings, activities such as singing, music, dancing, drama, hillwalking or cooking in the afternoons, and concerts in the evenings followed by music sessions in the local pubs. I first went to one of these summer schools three years ago and enjoyed it so much that I’ve been going back every year since.

From 23rd August to 20th September the Fachhochschule Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences will be running an International Summer Language School on Culture and Society, Economy and Technology in Germany. This includes general German language classes, as well as classes on business and technical German, and a cultural programme of day trips, visits to sporting events, games, parties and other activities.

At the UK’s largest language-related event, The Language Show, which will take place in Earls Court, London from 13th-17th October 2010, you can learn about many aspects of language learning and teaching from the exhibitors and at the free seminars. You can find out about language-related careers at the careers fair; learn the basics of a variety of languages in ‘taster’ sessions; and watch films and performances of music and dance from around the world. It is suitable for language learners, teachers, linguists and others who are keen on languages.
