Experiencing the fabulous New York

Cactus' Julien Schimel gives us the lowdown on what it's like for an international student to live in the bustling and iconic city that is New York...

Having just finished my studies in Business Administration, I thought I would try to find an internship in a place that I had never visited; a place that would stand out on my resume, and especially a city that would offer lots of entertainment! Then I thought about New York, where I am now working as a Sales and Marketing intern.

I soon realized how lucky I was to live in New York. Originally from France, it has been one of my top places to visit list but I never thought I would fully be experiencing the city one day.

This city is just amazing. There must be few places in the US that can host an international student as New York can. Although the city is pretty big, separated in 5 boroughs, its public transportation makes it easy to get from one point to another.

Each area can be very culturally and visually different from the one next to it. I have been here for 4 months now and am still impressed by the diversity of people living in the city. I also like that every neighborhood is very distinct in its reputation.

What I love in New York is the liveliness in the streets. Whether you are going out to a club on a Saturday or just have a drink during the week, there will always be people out having fun. Just like other kinds of entertaining events that take place all the time.

On the other hand, New Yorkers tend to be very busy and always in a hurry, which is something I had not found on the West Coast. I have often experienced a coldness from the people behind the counter when I am buying something, but that doesn’t take away any charm New York has. Another “drawback” is the cost of living. I was really surprised to see that taking my lunch break out in Chelsea would cost me that much, not to mention rent if you want to live in a convenient area. But I have to say this city is worth its price.

I enjoy living in this beautiful city so full of entertainment and diversity.
