Why Granada is a fantastic place to be this July
Monday, 29th March 2010
When it comes to music and dance venues, they don’t get much better than the likes of Granada’s awesome Alhambra. For two weeks every summer, this is exactly what’s on offer…
Taking place from 24 June - 14 July this year, Granada’s annual music and dance festival is a celebration of the world’s finest artists and performers. The event includes many different styles, from lots of different countries, but equally as important for the thousands of visitors are the gentle sounds of Flamenco music that drift through the city until the early hours. The programme usually features about 40 shows in total.
An added attraction for Granada festivalgoers is the range of superb venues that host the concerts and performances, including the King Carlos V Palace, the open-air theatre in the Generalife Gardens, El Patio de los Arrayanes in the heart of the Alhambra and various other historic churches and buildings. All are well worth a visit in their own right, but become even more memorable in this context.
These days the festival has developed into one of Spain’s major annual events, with appearances by such acclaimed artists as Arthur Rubinstein, Andrés Segovia, Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev.
