Additional funding from HEFCE to support the Routes into Languages programme announced

In August 2011, it was announced that a project to increase the number of students studying languages at university has been awarded extra funding of £1.2 million.
The extra money was allocated to the Routes into Languages Programme by the Higher Education Funding Council for England following an independent evaluation that was published in May. The evaluation found that the project had been successful in establishing partnerships and collaboration between higher education institutions and schools, and in raising pupils’ motivation and interest in languages.
The Routes into Languages project, which was set up in 2006, sends student ambassadors into schools to encourage children to study foreign languages beyond the age of 14. It is led by University of Southampton’s Centre for Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies, and also organises sixth-form events and activities such as linking languages with film and sport.
The extra funds, which follow grants worth £2 million over the last two years, will enable the project to continue until July 2012.
