Why learn English in London?

Learning English in the bustling capital of London is an unforgettable experience

The English language originates in the UK, and a good place to study that language is London, the capital of that country.

London is home to over 7.5 million people from all over the world and over 300 languages are spoken there in addition to English. It is the world’s leading business and financial centre, one of the leading cultural centres, and is influential in politics, education, entertainment, media, fashion and the arts.

London, which was founded by the Romans in AD 47, is full of history and historic buildings, some of which are over a thousand years old, and there are numerous fascinating museums covering a wide range of topics from natural history to transport, many of which are free to enter.

All kinds of world-class entertainment are available in London, including theatre, art, music, film, opera and sport. There are also numerous street entertainers, particularly in Covent Garden and Leicester Square. London’s shops sell almost anything you might desire, and there are a huge number of restaurants providing food from all over the world, so there’s never a shortage of things to do and see.

London’s public transport system makes it possible to travel around the city visiting the sights and exploring with relative ease, and there are tickets available which enable you to travel all day or all week within London for a reasonable price. Moreover you can also visit other parts of the UK or continental Europe from London by train, coach or plane.

Other ways to get around London include walking, which can be faster than going on the Underground sometimes, and cycling, which is perhaps not for the faint-hearted, or you can take a boat along the Thames. And if you feel the need to escape from the urban sprawl of London, there are many parks and other green areas waiting for you.

There are a large number of English language schools to choose from in London, as well as colleges and universities offering English language courses, so finding a course that suits you shouldn’t be too much of a problem. Some schools are located in central London, close to the major sights, while others can be found in the suburbs, where accommodation is somewhat easier to find and more likely to be fairly close to the school.

Although studying in London tends to be more expensive than in other parts of the UK, especially in terms of accommodation and transport, your experience there is likely to be unforgettable and well worth the cost.
