Soon to be showing at London’s White Bear Theatre, Desire/Desig is a play by Catalonia’s foremost playwright Josep Maria Benet I Jornet.
Born in Barcelona, Josep Maria Benet I Jornet is a theatre and television dramatist and scriptwriter. He has written more than 40 works for the stage and is said to have been a leading contributor to the revitalisation of Catalan theatre in the post Franco era.
On 3 May 2010, the Spanish theatre world paid tribute to his work with The Max Award of Honour, a lifetime achievement award at Spain’s equivalent of the Olivier Awards. His memoirs have also been published this year and are receiving rave reviews.
Translated into English by Sharon G. Feldman, ‘Desig’ explores the nature of desire and the possibilities of self-knowledge. It won the Catalan Literature National Prize when it was first performed in Barcelona in 1991.
The play will run from 13–31 July 2010 at the White Bear Theatre, Kennington, and on selected dates, Cactus students can take advantage of a fantastic 50% discount on the normal price.
