Cactus' Marion Herzig shares the highlights of this beautiful German city...

Freiburg is located in the south of Germany. The 200 000 inhabitant- town is located in the federal state of “Baden-Wuerttemberg” and offers a wide range of activities and sights.

The most popular attraction is the “Freiburger Muenster”, a big cathedral in the city centre. Every Saturday a huge market takes place around the minster, offering a wide range of typical foods like bread, sausages and waffles. But also you can find a wealth of fruits and vegetables there.

Freiburg has got one of the oldest and most notable universities in Germany, which has buildings and faculties in various parts of the city. With more than a hundred different fields of study the university attracts people from all over the world, although most students come to study Medicine or Law. The international environment is noticeable everywhere in the city, whether you’re having a nice coffee in one of the small pavement cafes in the old lanes, sitting in one of the many parks around the city, or heading to one of the nearby lakes to enjoy the warm weather in summer.

A typical landmark of Freiburg is the “Baechle”, which is a small canal in the streets of the Old Town. According to legend, if you step in the “Baechle” by mistake you will have to marry a person from Freiburg.

Although Freiburg has hot summers, in winter you can enjoy the snow in the hills, mostly in the Black Forest where you have a wide choice of sporting activities including skiing, snowboarding and ice-skating.

A further attraction close to Freiburg is the “Europa Park”, Germany`s largest theme park with amusements for everyone - the young and the young at heart. You can do many things, including braving the roller coasters, visiting some scary haunted houses and trying a bit of white-water rafting. The park attracts thousands of people every year, who come from all over the world.

The distance to the French and Swiss borders is very short- it takes about 45 minutes to go to Strasbourg or to Basle. So, if you would like to go shopping to another city just for a day, take a train or a bus and discover French or Swiss shopping pleasure.

By visiting Freiburg, you will also be able to enjoy a nice German beer!  The city is home the huge “Brauerei Ganter” brewery…
