Why learn English in Nottingham?

Nottingham is a city with lots to offer. It’s historic, multicultural and extremely lively.

It is normally the bigger, better-known cities that people think of when they consider learning English. Whilst many of these places are interesting and entertaining, they can sometimes be expensive, and with so many international students it can be hard to practise your English there too.

This is where choosing medium-sized and lesser-known cities like Nottingham can be advantageous.

Nottingham is located in England’s Midland region. It is 2 hours by train from London, and within easy reach of Manchester, Leeds and Birmingham.

If you have heard of Nottingham, it is probably in relation to ‘Robin Hood’ – according to the legend, this is where he lived!

Nottingham is actually home to two big and prestigious universities, which means that there is plenty on offer for students. It is famous for having excellent nightlife, and a vast selection of pubs and restaurants.

The universities do attract a good number of international students, which gives the place a cosmopolitan feel. The number of foreigners in comparison to London or Edinburgh is far less though, which means that you will need to rely much more on your English skills to get by.

If you prefer to spend your free time in the countryside, rather than the shopping area, or local bars and restaurants, there will definitely be options for you in and around Nottingham. The city is home to many parks, and is surrounded by some really beautiful countryside. The Peak District is a short bus or train ride away, and will give you plenty of opportunity to walk, or cycle and take in the beautiful scenery.

If, when it comes to sport and activities, you prefer to ‘watch’ rather than ‘do’, fear not! Nottingham boasts two popular football teams, and a very successful cricket team that you can watch at the impressive Trent Bridge ground.

Nottingham is a really great option for anyone hoping to learn or revise their English - it offers good value for money, great opportunities for you to practise the language, and a wealth of things to do in your free time.
