Study in multicultural San Diego
Wednesday, 3rd June 2009
When I flew over to San Diego earlier this year I had no idea what to expect of the city- my thoughts stretched to a large number of Spanish speakers, fantastic weather, a great beach culture. My impressons were right - it has all of those things, but it also has plenty more.
San Diego is a great place to be, as all the locals are very much aware. They live in what is almost a bilingual community, with all the advantages that it brings.
It’s easy to think that in San Diego everyone speaks either Spanish or English, and that’s the end of it. However, San Diego is a multi-cultural city where tourists from many different countries go to soak up the sunshine on the beautiful beaches of La Jolla, learn about Lego at the theme park, and learn a language.
It’s a hugely popular destination for students wanting to learn English, and they come from all over the globe to do so, adding to the multi-culturality and keeping the city alive. It’s almost as popular for those wanting to learn Spanish too, and other languages such as Chinese and German are now also finding their place as more and more international companies open up in the area.
Walking round the park everyone you pass is speaking a different language, and you can see from the diverse habits they have - outdoor barbeques, and a range of musical styles on the car stereos- that there are just as many diverse cultures.
Taking a trip to Tijuana is a must for anyone who either lives in San Diego or is visiting there, and although south of the border it’s easy to speak to (almost) everyone in English, you know that you have a better chance of getting a good deal if you speak some of the lingo. Using my rusty Mexican Spanish I managed to chat for a while with the locals and see what life in the border town is like for them. The influence of the other side of the border is very evident for both Tijuanans and San Diegans alike, and this is something that they relish, definitely enjoying their proximity to another country.
Although I was only in San Diego for a few days, I really felt that I had found an original place with a diverse personality. It encompasses all that is best of different cultures, and is the ideal spot to soak up a new language or two.
