IATEFL ‘Cactus to Conference’ scholarship
Tuesday, 1st September 2009
Cactus is thrilled to announce a new annual scholarship, created to enable one lucky new EFL teacher to become a member of IATEFL (the International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language), and to attend the yearly IATEFL conference.
The scholarship is for newly-qualified TEFLers, with less than three years’ experience, who believe they deserve more as an English teacher than simply planning lessons and marking homework.
The scholarship also gives successful applicants the coveted opportunity to be published in IATEFL publications and on the Cactus website.
Whilst all EFL teachers are eligible for IATEFL membership, in reality it is not often something that a newly qualified teacher can really afford. Also, very often teachers don’t become aware of it until later in their careers, and therefore do not realise what they are missing out on!
By being awarded the Cactus scholarship, you will gain a truly sought-after opportunity to learn about and keep up to date with the most recent developments within the EFL industry. You will also have access to teacher development opportunities that might not usually be available to you. And, more importantly, you will become part of a huge, welcoming community of English teachers which will change your beliefs about teaching and expand your professional horizons.
What the scholarship covers
• Conference registration
• £400 towards accommodation and travel costs
• A year’s IATEFL membership
Pre-requisites for applicants
• You must be a newly qualified teacher with between one and three years’ experience in the ELT profession
• You must also agree to write a brief article, about 400 words, on your conference experience, plus two further articles of similar length at 6 and 12 months after the conference about how winning has affected your practice
Application components and procedure
• An outline, between 400-500 words, of the your best lesson so far and why you think it went well
• A brief curriculum vitae highlighting any writing experience you may have
• A passport size photograph (for inclusion in the conference programme if you win)
Applications must be marked ‘Cactus to Conference Scholarship’ and submitted to by the deadline set by IATEFL (usually sometime in September).
Best of luck!
