How to practise your Italian in Toronto
Monday, 21st December 2009
Most people associate two languages with Canada: English and French. But believe it or not, Toronto is a bustling hot spot for Italian speakers.
If you’re a native Italian speaker or just taking classes and you want to practise, there are plenty of clubs and societies just waiting for you to introduce yourself.
Toronto has an Italian Cultural Institute which holds many events throughout the year, each aiming to foster the cultural relationship between Canada and Italy. All of the institute’s events are free to the public. You can even take courses at the institute, online or in a classroom setting.
Join in with the Toronto Italian Language Meetup Group. There have been 93 meetups already with the next one taking place on January 11, 2010. The group was created online 8 years ago and already has over 700 members. What an amazing amount of people with whom you can share the Italian language! And that is just one group.
Although its head office is in Rome, Tornoto plays host to a branch of The Dante Alighieri Society. Its mandate is “to teach and promote the Italian Language and culture throughout the world.” The first committee of The Dante Alighieri Society in Toronto took place in 1908. It really began to thrive after World War II, when many Italians immigrated to Canada and wanted to keep in contact with the culture of their Mother Country.
The society helped to set up the Centro Scuola e Cultura Italiana, or The Canadian Centre for Italian Culture and Education. This centre is another great place to take classes and attend various Italian-related events. The opportunity to practise your Italian really is limitless, as the culture is absolutely thriving all across Toronto.
